It's 7:40 on a weekday, your apartment Wi-Fi has died again, and your first call is at nine. Shinjuku can fix that, as long as you know which door to walk through. This is a branch-by-branch list of chain cafés and pay-by-the-hour spots around the station where a laptop, a socket and a few quiet hours are part of the deal.
Budget¥300 for a Doutor coffee, ¥500 an hour for a booth or book lounge (as of Oct 2026)
TimeOpen from 6:30 on weekdays; one spot never closes
Best forRemote workers, students, anyone between appointments
StartJR Shinjuku Station, West Exit for early starts, East Exit for late nights
How to pick by exit
Shinjuku Station is big enough that the wrong exit costs you fifteen minutes. So think about it the other way round. Decide when you need to work, then pick the side of the station.
- West Exit (Nishi-Shinjuku): the office-tower side. Cafés open early and fill with salaried workers at lunch, then go quiet again by mid-afternoon. Weekends are calmer here, though some places close earlier.
- East Exit and Shinjuku-sanchome: the shopping side. Later hours, busier weekends, and the one café on this list that runs 24 hours.
- Kabukicho and Okubo: a short walk north. Better for private booths and meeting rooms you can book, and good in the daytime when the area is mostly office workers and shoppers.
West Exit: early starts
1 Doutor Coffee Shop Nishi-Shinjuku 1-chome
The cheapest reliable desk on the west side. It opens at 6:30 on weekdays, all 104 seats are non-smoking (smokers get a separate booth), and Doutor lists outlets and free Wi-Fi for this branch. You'll find it in the Asahi Shinjuku Building. Come before 11:30 or after 14:00. At lunch you'll be sharing with half of Nishi-Shinjuku.
2 Kissa-shitsu Renoir Shinjuku Nishiguchi 1-chome
A basement Renoir about five minutes on foot from the West Exit. Drinks cost more than at Doutor, and that is the point: you're paying for a padded chair and nobody hurrying you out. Renoir lists a power service here but asks you to check with staff, so say dengen and point at your charger when you sit down. Our pick on the west side if you have a long morning of writing ahead.
East Exit and Sanchome: late and all night
3 Excelsior Caffè Shinjuku Sanchome
Doutor's slightly more grown-up sister brand, with bigger tables and pasta on the menu if work runs past dinner. It pays by almost anything, from Suica to PayPay to card. If it's full, Renoir Shinjuku Chuo-Higashiguchi is a few doors along at Shinjuku 3-28-13 (8:00–22:00, basement), which also lists Wi-Fi and a power service.
4 Coffee Kizoku Edinburgh
The deadline café. It's an old-school kissaten on the second floor, and its own site confirms 24-hour opening and food at any hour. Time Out Tokyo lists free Wi-Fi and outlets at the seats. It's the one place on this list where 2 a.m. is a normal time to be typing. A coffee here is a treat rather than a bargain, so treat it as your rent for the table. The café posts closures for building maintenance on its website now and then, so look before a late-night trip.
Kabukicho and Okubo: booths, rooms and books
5 Kissa-shitsu Renoir Shinjuku Kuyakusho-yoko
Behind Shinjuku City Office, about seven minutes from the East Exit. The café floor is a normal Renoir, but this branch also runs "My Space," seven rentable rooms. The smallest are 10-person rooms at ¥1,280 an hour if you book online, ¥1,480 at the regular rate. You can book from one person, and rooms come with outlets and Wi-Fi. That makes it the answer for a client video call you can't take at a café table. Cancel at least two days ahead, or you pay the full fee.
6 BOOK AND BED TOKYO Shinjuku (Book Lounge)
A book hostel that sells lounge time to non-guests in the afternoon. You get shelves of books, free Wi-Fi and a sofa eight floors above Kabukicho. Outlets aren't listed, so arrive with a full battery. Book through the hostel's reservation page. If you stay past your time it extends automatically and charges you, so set an alarm. Better for reading and light work than for a day of spreadsheets.
7 Kissa-shitsu Renoir Okubo (My Booth)
One stop from Shinjuku on the Sobu Line. This branch has four non-smoking "My Booth" seats, semi-private desks you can reserve by phone or at the counter. After your first drink, refills of Renoir's blend coffee and tea are free. Three hours with bottomless coffee for ¥1,050 plus one drink is hard to beat anywhere near Shinjuku. With only four booths, call ahead (03-3368-2209) before you make the trip.
Small things that save your session
- Order first, then sit. At Doutor and Excelsior you queue at the counter and carry your tray. At Renoir, sit down and staff come to you.
- Ask before you plug in. Some branches list a power service without saying which seats have it. One polite question avoids a lot of awkwardness.
- Calls go outside. Talking at the table is frowned on in all of these. Book a Renoir room or step out to the stairwell.
- Public Wi-Fi is public. Renoir asks you to read its usage notes before connecting. Use a VPN or your phone's hotspot for banking or client files.
- Smoking areas are sealed off at every branch here, but Renoir's heated-tobacco sections can be large. Ask for kin'en-seki (non-smoking) if you're sensitive to smell.
Words that work
- 禁煙席はありますか? (kin'en-seki wa arimasu ka?) — Do you have non-smoking seats?
- コンセントのある席はどこですか? (konsento no aru seki wa doko desu ka?) — Which seats have outlets?
- ブースを予約したいです (buusu o yoyaku shitai desu) — I'd like to book a booth.
Fancy third-wave coffee is great, but the cafés that actually keep Tokyo working are the chains with tired sofas and staff who never rush you. Learn where three of them are, and the city stops being a place where you can't find a desk.
