The ticket machine offers you six different “one-day” buttons, and the person behind you is sighing. Here's the short version before you get there: most days, plain Suica or PASMO wins. A pass only pays when you'll ride more than a certain number of times, and that number is easy to work out.

Short subway hops on Tokyo Metro cost ¥178 by IC card, 7–11 km is ¥209, and 12–19 km is ¥252. On JR after the March 2026 fare change, the shortest IC fare is ¥155, then ¥199 for 4–6 km and ¥209 for 7–10 km (all as of Oct 2026). Use those numbers against the pass price.

Three days, three answers
A weekday errand run. Home to the ward office, then to a phone shop, then home. That's three rides. Skip the pass and tap your card.
Showing a friend around on Saturday. Asakusa in the morning, Ginza for lunch, Omotesando in the afternoon, a bar near Ebisu at night. If the route stays on Metro lines, the ¥700 Metro 24-hour Ticket is the obvious buy. One thing that makes it better than it looks: the paper version counts 24 hours from your first gate, not the calendar day, so a Saturday-noon start still covers Sunday morning. (The IC version on PASMO counts from the time you buy it.)
A JR-heavy Sunday. Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku and Ueno along the Yamanote Line. The Tokunai Pass at ¥870 covers it, and you can load it onto Mobile Suica on the day.
Passes residents can't buy
The Tokyo Subway Ticket (¥1,000 for 24 hours, ¥1,500 for 48, ¥2,000 for 72) is the cheapest way to ride both subway networks, but Tokyo Metro sells it to overseas visitors and to people living outside Tokyo and seven nearby prefectures. If you live in Tokyo, it's not for you. If your parents are flying in, though, it's the first thing to sort out for them.
Your commuter pass is the real money-saver
- Look at JR's off-peak commuter pass. It's priced about 15% below a normal JR teiki. The catch: each station has a morning peak window (Fujisawa's is 6:50–8:20, for example), and the pass doesn't cover you if you go through the gate inside it; that ride is charged as a normal fare. If your job starts at 10:00, this is free money. If you sometimes have early meetings, you'll pay the normal fare on those days, so count them first.
- The off-peak area got bigger in March 2026, reaching stations such as Hiratsuka, Kuki and Konosu. Worth rechecking if you live at the edge of the commuter belt.
- Buy it in Mobile Suica. No queue, and JR East says commuter passes bought there earn 1 JRE POINT per ¥50 once your Suica is registered.
- Ride your route on weekends. A teiki covers every station between its two ends, any day of the week.
Points: small, but automatic
- Suica: points only build up once you register your Suica number on the JRE POINT website. Do it once and forget about it. Points can be used for Suica top-ups and at station shops.
- PASMO: Tokyo Metro runs its own free program, Metro Point Club (metpo), for registered PASMO cards, with points you can load back onto the card. Registering takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
- Don't chase campaigns too hard. Earn rates and bonus campaigns change often, so check the current terms before you switch cards for a few hundred yen.
Easy mistakes to avoid
- Buying the ¥1,100 combined ticket for a Metro-only day. That's ¥400 thrown away.
- Treating a paper pass like a card. If you bought the paper version, it goes through the slot in the gate, not on the IC reader. Keep it somewhere you won't bend it.
- Riding past the free zone without noticing. On a JR pass you just pay the extra at the fare adjustment machine, but it adds up.
- Buying ahead at a machine. Machines mostly sell same-day tickets. For advance purchase, use the online store or a ticket window.
Words that work
- 一日乗車券はありますか? (ichinichi joushaken wa arimasu ka?) — Do you have a one-day ticket?
- オフピーク定期券にしたいです (ofu piiku teikiken ni shitai desu) — I'd like an off-peak commuter pass.
- 精算機はどこですか? (seisanki wa doko desu ka?) — Where's the fare adjustment machine?
Count your rides before you buy anything. In this city the cheapest ticket is usually the card already in your pocket, and the second cheapest is a teiki someone else is paying for.
