Sometimes you need out of the city. The good news: Tokyo's private railways compete hard for weekend day-trippers, and their discount passes make a day of mountains, old towns or sea surprisingly cheap. Here are four easy escapes, plus the winter rail pass that makes longer trips almost free.

1. Mountains: Mt. Takao
Mt. Takao (Takao-san)
The cheapest real hike from central Tokyo. Several trails lead up through cedar forest to a temple and a summit with Mt. Fuji views on clear days; the easiest takes about 90 minutes, or ride the cable car part way. Mid to late November is peak autumn colour and very busy, so start early. There's an onsen right by the station for afterwards.
2. Old town: Kawagoe
Kawagoe ("Little Edo")
A street of black-plastered Edo-era warehouses, a wooden bell tower, and a candy alley full of old-fashioned sweets. The coupon covers the round trip from Ikebukuro, local buses around the old town and small shop discounts. Buy it at Tobu Tojo Line ticket machines; the transport part is valid for one day. (Seibu sells a similar pass from Seibu-Shinjuku.)
3. The sea: Kamakura and Enoshima
Kamakura and Enoshima
The Great Buddha, temples in the hills and the island of Enoshima, linked by the little Enoden seaside train. The freepass covers the round trip from Shinjuku to Fujisawa plus unlimited Enoden rides, so you can hop between Kamakura and the beach all day. Limited express seat fees (Romancecar) are extra. Weekday visits are far calmer.
4. Forest and river: Okutama and Mitake
Mitake and Okutama
The far west of Tokyo is all mountains: a shrine village on top of Mt. Mitake, river gorges, and walking trails along the Tama River. No pass needed; just tap your IC card. Check return train times, as they get sparse in the evening.
For longer trips: Seishun 18 Kippu (winter 2026)
- What: unlimited rides on JR local and rapid trains for 3 or 5 consecutive days.
- Price: 3 days ¥10,000 / 5 days ¥12,050. Despite the name, there's no age limit.
- When: on sale Nov 27, 2026 – Jan 11, 2027; valid Dec 11, 2026 – Jan 11, 2027.
- Catch: one person only, no shinkansen or limited express, and long hours on local trains. Perfect for slow trips to Nagano, the Izu peninsula or beyond.
Make day trips cheaper
- Start at the railway's terminal. Passes are usually sold from the line's own stations (Shinjuku for Odakyu and Keio, Ikebukuro for Tobu and Seibu).
- Go on weekdays if your schedule allows; trains and sights are emptier.
- Pack lunch from a konbini or depachika the night before.
- Note: JR East raised fares in March 2026. Private-railway passes are often better value now.
Words that work
- フリーパスはどこで買えますか? (furii pasu wa doko de kaemasu ka?) — Where can I buy the free pass?
- この電車は高尾山口に行きますか? (kono densha wa takaosanguchi ni ikimasu ka?) — Does this train go to Takaosanguchi?
- 最終電車は何時ですか? (saishuu densha wa nanji desu ka?) — What time is the last train?
An hour from Shinjuku, the air smells of cedar and the loudest thing is a crow. Tokyo is brilliant, but it's even better when you remember you can leave it for the price of lunch.
