Cheap Designer Secondhand in Tokyo: The Toyoko Line Crawl

Daikanyama, Nakameguro, Meguro and Gakugei-daigaku for designer resale with fewer crowds, plus how to avoid fakes and who can shop tax-free.

Harajuku resale racks get picked over by lunchtime on a Saturday. Ride the Tokyu Toyoko Line a few stops south and the crowd thins out, while the clothes are still the ones Tokyo's office workers and creatives bought new: Japanese labels, Margiela, Jil Sander, the occasional Chanel bag. Here's how to work that stretch, and how not to get burned on a fake.

Why the Toyoko Line works

Daikanyama, Nakameguro, Yutenji and Gakugei-daigaku are residential. People who live here sell close to home, so the stock skews toward quiet, well-kept pieces rather than loud streetwear. Shops open at different times, which shapes the route: start in Daikanyama, where the first shop opens at 10:00, and finish in Meguro or Gakugei-daigaku, where they stay open until 21:00.

1 Trefac Style Daikanyama

10:00–21:00 · open daily · 6 min from Daikanyama Sta. North Exit, 12 min from JR Shibuya (as of Oct 2026)

Ground floor of the NTT Shibuya Building on Sarugakucho. It's a general clothing and brand-goods resale shop, so expect to flip through plenty of ordinary pieces to find the good ones. Do it here first, while you're fresh.

Nakameguro: the best single stop

2 KINDAL Nakameguro

12:00–20:00 · no regular holiday · 6 min from Nakameguro Sta. main exit, 10 min from Daikanyama (as of Oct 2026)

If you only have time for one shop, make it this one. The buying list reads like a Tokyo stylist's wardrobe: AURALEE, COMOLI, Graphpaper, Mame Kurogouchi, plus Margiela, Jil Sander and Marni. The building has scaffolding for exterior work until about Nov 12, 2026 (it may run longer), but the shop stays open.

3 Tansuya Nakameguro

10:30–18:30 · closed Tuesdays · 7 min from Nakameguro Sta., along the Meguro River (as of Oct 2026)

A detour for something nobody back home will own: second-hand kimono, obi, haori and men's kimono, mixed with new pieces. Between Midori-bashi and Tenjin-bashi bridges. Go before 18:30; it closes early compared with the clothes shops.

Meguro and Gakugei-daigaku: luxury and late hours

4 Trefac Style Meguro

12:00–21:00 · open daily · 8 min from Meguro Sta., on Yamate-dori near Hotel Gajoen (as of Oct 2026)

This branch leans luxury, with Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton called out by the shop, plus shoes and small leather goods. Better for a bag or wallet than for a jacket.

5 Trefac Style Gakugei-daigaku

10:00–21:00 · open daily · 4 min from Gakugei-daigaku Sta. via the West Exit shopping street (as of Oct 2026)

On Komazawa-dori. A good closing stop because it stays open late, and the station's shopping streets are full of cheap dinner options afterwards.

6 Hard Off Gakugei-daigaku Ekimae

11:00–20:00 · open daily · 3 min from Gakugei-daigaku Sta. East Exit (as of Oct 2026)

Not a clothing shop, but it stocks used watches and cameras, which pair well with a designer haul. Ask to see the watch out of the case and check that it runs before you pay.

Already know Harajuku, Shimokitazawa and Koenji?

Those three are covered in our area guide to used designer clothes. The short version: Harajuku has the most designer stock and the most competition, Shimokitazawa and Koenji are about vintage and digging rather than labels. If you want current Japanese designers at fair prices without the elbows, the Toyoko Line wins. If you want 90s American vintage, go to Shimokitazawa.

Spotting fakes before you pay

Licensed resale shops in Japan buy over the counter and must check the seller's ID, so stock has a paper trail. That lowers the risk. It doesn't remove it, and none of the chain pages we checked promises an authenticity refund in writing. So:

  • Ask the return question first. "If this turns out to be fake, can I return it?" A clear answer is worth more than a low price.
  • Keep the receipt. 2nd STREET, for example, wants the receipt for any in-store return, within 7 days of purchase for defects.
  • Price check on your phone. A current-season luxury bag at a fraction of the going resale price is a warning, not luck.
  • Look for what should be there. Serial numbers, date codes, care labels and the brand's usual stitching. Missing details are a reason to walk.
  • Be extra careful on flea-market apps. Japan's National Consumer Affairs Center warns that app disputes are mostly left to buyer and seller. One case it describes: a seller who, when asked, said they "never clearly said it was genuine". If a deal goes wrong, call the consumer hotline 188.
  • Don't order "cheap designer" from overseas sites. Since Oct 1, 2022, Japan Customs can seize counterfeits mailed from overseas businesses even for personal use, and it doesn't handle refunds.

Tax-free: probably not for you

If you live and work in Japan, you can't shop tax-free. The National Tax Agency limits it to non-residents such as people on a temporary visitor status. Visiting friends can, and the rules change on Nov 1, 2026: they pay full price in the shop and claim the tax back on departure, with a ¥5,000 pre-tax minimum per shop per day (as of Oct 2026). Not every resale shop is a tax-free shop either, so they should ask before paying. Our tax-free refund guide walks through the airport step.

Words that work

  • 偽物だったら返品できますか? (nisemono dattara henpin dekimasu ka?) — If it's fake, can I return it?
  • ショーケースから出してもらえますか? (shōkēsu kara dashite moraemasu ka?) — Could you take it out of the case?
  • 試着してもいいですか? (shichaku shite mo ii desu ka?) — May I try it on?

The Toyoko Line rewards regulars. Pick two shops, drop in every couple of weeks, and the racks start to feel like your own wardrobe on rotation.
