Shinjuku on Almost Zero Yen: Waseda, Kagurazaka & More

A free day across Shinjuku City: a spring-fed forest, the Murakami Library, Kagurazaka shrines and a free night view from city hall.

Most of us only know Shinjuku as the station where we change trains. But the ward stretches north to a university campus, a spring-fed forest and a hill of old Edo streets, and almost all of it is free. Here's a day that starts under trees in Ochiai and ends 200 metres up in West Shinjuku, spending little more than a few short train fares.

Best forThursdays and Fridays, book lovers, walkers

StartTakadanobaba Sta.

Already done the city hall deck, Shinjuku Gyoen and the 3D cat? Those are in our first Shinjuku for (Almost) Free guide. This route goes where that one doesn't. Hours were checked on official pages (as of Oct 2026).

Morning: a forest in Ochiai

1 Otomeyama Park

Free · Oct–Mar 7:00–17:00, Apr–Sep 7:00–19:00 · 7 min from Takadanobaba Sta. (as of Oct 2026)

A slope of oak and chinquapin woodland with spring water bubbling into a pond. The springs are on Tokyo's list of 57 notable spring waters, and neighbours raise fireflies here in summer. Go early with a konbini coffee. It's a residential area, so keep it quiet, and there's no parking.

Late morning: Waseda, for free

From Takadanobaba, walk east or take Toei bus 学02 to the Waseda main gate (Waseda Daigaku Seimon), the last stop. Three free places sit within a few minutes of each other on campus.

2 Waseda International House of Literature (Haruki Murakami Library)

Free · 10:00–17:00 · closed Wed and some other days · Building No. 4, near the campus East Gate · 7 min from Waseda Sta. (Tozai Line) Exit 3a/3b (as of Oct 2026)

A Kengo Kuma–designed library built around Murakami's own archive and the books that shaped him, with exhibitions that change through the year. Photos are allowed, but no video and no close-ups of books. There are no lockers, so come light. The basement café has its own entrance if you just want a coffee.

Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum (Enpaku)

Free · 10:00–17:00, Tue & Fri until 19:00 · next to the Murakami Library (as of Oct 2026)

Japan's big theatre museum, inside a building modelled on an Elizabethan playhouse. Kabuki, noh and bunraku sit next to Western stage history, and two special exhibitions a year. On Tuesday or Friday you can save this for last and still have time.

Okuma Garden

Free · Oct–Mar 9:00–16:30 · open on university class days only, closed in bad weather (as of Oct 2026)

A landscaped garden on campus that anyone can walk into. It's the best free bench in the area for lunch, but it's tied to the academic calendar, so don't plan around it during university holidays.

3 Ana Hachimangu

Free · open all day · 3 min from Waseda Sta. (Tozai Line) (as of Oct 2026)

A shrine with deep roots in the area and a big reputation for money luck. Between the winter solstice and Setsubun it hands out the ichiyo-raifuku charm, and the solstice morning queue is famous. Outside that season it's peaceful. Step next door to Hojoji temple too.

Afternoon: down the hill in Kagurazaka

Ride the Tozai Line one stop from Waseda to Kagurazaka. This is the old geisha district, all stone lanes and wooden fronts, and walking it costs nothing.

4 Akagi Shrine

Free · open 24 hours, shrine office 9:00–17:00 · 1 min from Kagurazaka Sta. Exit 1 (as of Oct 2026)

Rebuilt in 2010 with Kengo Kuma, so you get a second Kuma building on the same day: a glass-walled hall with clean wooden lines. There's a café beside the office. Cards aren't accepted for charms, so bring coins.

5 Zenkoku-ji (Kagurazaka Bishamonten)

Free to enter grounds · Kagurazaka 5-chome · 6 min from Kagurazaka Sta. Exit A1, 5 min from Iidabashi Exit B3 (as of Oct 2026)

The temple halfway down Kagurazaka-dori, dedicated to Bishamonten, the god of treasure. Stop in, then explore the stone-paved side alleys around it. Small detail locals like: Kagurazaka-dori's one-way traffic switches direction between morning and afternoon.

From here, walk down to Iidabashi Station.

Evening: the free view (or the free art)

6 Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, South Observatory

Free · entry 9:30–21:30 · closed 1st & 3rd Tue · Tochomae Sta. (as of Oct 2026)

The North deck stops letting people in at 17:00, so after dark it's the South one. End the day here and look back across the ward you just crossed. Full night plan in our Shinjuku at Night guide.

7 NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC), Open Space

Free (Open Space) · 11:00–18:00 · closed Mon · Tokyo Opera City Tower 4F · 3 min from Hatsudai Sta. East Exit (Keio New Line) (as of Oct 2026)

The rainy-day swap. A media-art center whose Open Space shows works for free; only some special exhibitions charge. Closes at 18:00, so do it before the observatory, not after.

Make the day work

  • Pick the right day. Avoid Wednesday (Murakami Library closed), Monday (ICC closed) and the 1st and 3rd Tuesday (South Observatory closed). Thursday or Friday is the sweet spot.
  • Short on time? Do Waseda + Kagurazaka only. They're one stop apart on the Tozai Line.
  • Eat cheap. Waseda is a student area, so set lunches are easy to find. Or bring food to a bench.
  • Be a good guest on campus. Students are working. Keep voices down in libraries and don't wander into classrooms.

Words that work

  • 写真を撮ってもいいですか? (shashin o totte mo ii desu ka?) — May I take photos?
  • 入口はどこですか? (iriguchi wa doko desu ka?) — Where's the entrance?
  • 今日は開いていますか? (kyou wa aite imasu ka?) — Are you open today?

Shinjuku the station is loud and fast. Shinjuku the ward is spring water, library chairs and shrine steps. Spend one day on the slow version and the fast one gets easier to live with.
