First Train From Shinjuku: Times by Line and Where to Wait

Stuck in Shinjuku after the last train? First JR departures by line, soba shops that close only 3:00–4:00, and booths or karaoke rooms near the gates.

글 JOHN NANJO 2026.10.24 13 분 분량

The departure board at Shinjuku flips over to a blank screen, the gates on the JR side start to close, and you are still on the wrong side of town. Don't panic and don't flag the first taxi. If you know which platform your first train leaves from, the next four hours are easy to plan, and most of them can be spent sitting down within a few minutes of the station.

When the first trains leave Shinjuku

These are JR East's Saturday and holiday timetables for Shinjuku, which is what you need on a Friday or Saturday night out. Weekday mornings run on a slightly different table, so check the JR site or your transit app if you are stuck midweek. Times as of Oct 2026.

  • Chuo-Sobu Line local (yellow), toward Ochanomizu and Chiba: first train 4:31.
  • Yamanote Line, toward Shibuya and Shinagawa: first train 4:43.
  • Yamanote Line, toward Ikebukuro and Ueno: first train 4:44.
  • Chuo Line Rapid (orange), toward Takao: first train 4:54.
  • Chuo-Sobu Line local, toward Nakano and Mitaka: first train 5:01.

Two details catch people out. The last westbound yellow trains of the night (0:44 and 0:53 on the holiday table) stop at Nakano, so if you live in Koenji or Kichijoji, the one you actually need is the 0:35 to Mitaka. And the private lines (Odakyu, Keio) and the subways each run their own first-train schedule. Search your exact route in a transit app before you settle in anywhere, and set an alarm for twenty minutes before departure.

A cheap bowl before the shutters

Fuji Soba is the standing-counter soba chain that has fed Tokyo's night workers for decades. Buy a ticket from the machine at the door, hand it over, and your bowl usually arrives in a couple of minutes. The thing to know: Shinjuku branches close for one hour, from 3:00 to 4:00, on local government guidance, with last orders at 2:45. Eat before that, or wait until 4:00 and make it breakfast on the way to the platform.

Fuji Soba Shinjuku Tocho

Closed 3:00–4:00, last order 2:45 · 1-19-12 Nishi-Shinjuku · West side (as of Oct 2026)

The handier branch if you are already on the west side or heading for the Odakyu or Keio gates. A hot kake soba is the quickest thing on the machine. Good for one person; there is not much room for a group to linger.

Fuji Soba Shinjuku

Closed 3:00–4:00, last order 2:45 · 3-14-25 Shinjuku · East side, toward Shinjuku-sanchome (as of Oct 2026)

The east-side option, a short walk from the Central East and East exits. If your group splits after karaoke, this is a sensible place to regroup at 4:00 before walking back to the JR gates together.

Where to sit for three hours

Which one you choose depends on how many of you there are. Alone, a booth beats a karaoke room. Three or four friends splitting a room will usually pay less each than one person in a booth, and you get a sofa and a door that closes.

1 Kaikatsu CLUB Shinjuku West Exit

Lockable private booths, flat and reclining rooms, free shower · 4F, 1-8-5 Nishi-Shinjuku · about 3 min on foot from the Plaza-dori side (as of Oct 2026)

An internet café chain with locked private rooms, which is the reason to choose it over an open-seat manga café when you are alone and want to actually sleep. Packs are priced by length of stay; read the price board at reception before you pick. Ask for a flat room if you want to lie down rather than recline.

Bring ID with your address on it. Because of Tokyo's rules for internet cafés, Kaikatsu asks for ID at Tokyo branches, even from existing members on their first visit there. Its own guidance says a Japanese passport issued since February 2020 needs a second document showing your current address. For most foreign residents, the residence card is the obvious one to carry. Visitors with only a foreign passport should ask at the counter before paying.

2 Karaoke-kan Shinjuku Chuo-guchi

Sun–Thu & holidays 11:00–5:00 · Fri, Sat & nights before holidays 11:00–6:00 · 3-36-5 Shinjuku (as of Oct 2026)

On Friday and Saturday nights this branch stays open until 6:00, which comfortably covers every first train in the list above. Ask at the counter for the free-time plan that runs to closing; prices change by day and time, so confirm the total and any drink rule before you take the room. Members pay less than walk-ins.

Already done this once and want the Kabukicho version, with a food hall and a hot-spring lounge? That route is in our Kabukicho until-morning guide.

Getting to the platform at 4:30

  • Leave fifteen minutes early. Shinjuku is huge and half asleep at that hour, and the walk from a west-side booth to the Chuo platforms takes longer than you think.
  • Top up your IC card before you settle in. Do it while the station is still open at night, so there is nothing between you and the gate at 4:40.
  • Sit, don't sleep, on the Yamanote. It's a loop. Doze off and you will see Shinjuku again in about an hour.
  • Taxi maths. If three of you live on the same line, compare one shared taxi with three booths before deciding. Our getting around guide covers taxi apps and late-night fares.

Stay safe

  • Touts around the station at night will offer bars, "girls" or cheap drinks. Don't stop, don't follow anyone, and don't hand over your card.
  • Keep your phone above 30%. Booths and karaoke rooms have outlets; a dead phone means no timetable and no taxi app.
  • Halloween night: Shinjuku City has set a street-drinking restriction around Shinjuku Station from 17:00 on Sat Oct 31 to 5:00 on Sun Nov 1, 2026. Drink inside, not on the pavement.
  • Lock valuables in your booth or keep them on you. Don't leave a bag on a karaoke sofa while you go to the drink bar.
  • Emergency: police 110, fire and ambulance 119. If something goes wrong, look for a koban (police box) near the station.

Words that work

  • 始発は何番線ですか? (shihatsu wa nanbansen desu ka?) — Which platform is the first train from?
  • 閉店まででお願いします (heiten made de onegaishimasu) — Until closing, please.
  • 鍵付きの個室はありますか? (kagitsuki no koshitsu wa arimasu ka?) — Do you have a room that locks?

A 4:30 Chuo Line train is its own little Tokyo: chefs going to work, students going home, someone asleep on a guitar case. You'll be fine. Just set two alarms.
